各位朋友們平安, 今天的週末問安的主題是: 麗池飯店

中古世紀歐洲的宮廷裏流行維持一批所謂的紀錄歌手, 這些歌手自己作曲寫詞並吟唱專為歌頌宮廷王公的歌曲, 這些歌曲雖是歌頌王公居多, 郤是很生動地將宮廷生活描述下來, 英文稱此類歌手為 Minstrel. 現代社會裏, 宮廷不復存在, 郤有一些歌曲作者專精寫出能傳達社會脈動的歌, Minstrel 一詞乃套用在此類歌曲作家身上, 但 Minstrel 並不是民謡作家, 民謠是社會長期傳唱的弦律, 大部分時候作曲寫詞者不明, Minstrel 不但自己作曲, 也自己寫詞, 他們所作的歌, 除了旋律優美之外, 歌詞往往闡述當代人生, 緊扣社會民情, 甚得大眾共鳴, 美國社會公認的歌曲 Minstrel 有四人: Stephen Foster, Walt Whitman, Carl Sandburg, 及 Irving Berlin, 其中又以 Irving Berlin 最為人津津樂道.

Irving Berlin 是從俄國逃出現的猶太人, 生長在紐約髒亂的低層猶太人區, 逃亡期間無法受太多教育, 只好到街上賣唱維生, 進一步自己寫歌來賣, 竟然一步歩竄紅, 成為美國歷史上最偉大的歌曲作家, 稱為 American Song Writer, 他所寫 God Bless America 號稱是另一美國國歌, 傳唱至今竟不稍歇, 其實該曲只是 Berlin 有感於美國接受移民, 自由平等相待, 心存感恩而寫的歌, 但歌詞納入宗教情操, 抓住了移民的心境, 大家自動在各種場合高聲唱, 至今不衰.

Minstrel 一詞如何翻譯? 想了很久, 翻成時代作曲家如何? 本來想譯成民歌大師, 台灣早年的校園民歌手也是自寫自唱, 傳唱當時校園人心脈動, 蠻符合 Minstrel 的定義. 但 Minstrel 的影響和歷史定位不但遠超過民歌手, 其歌曲的旋律符合基本音樂理論，層次要高了很多，這裏分享 Irving Berlin 寫的 Puttin’ on the Ritz, Putting’ on the Ritz 是美式英語的 Slang 俗語, 意思是穿戴時髦, Berlin 拿來做歌名, 描述紐約第五大道的街景, 意思是心情不好的時候, 不妨到第五大道看看有錢人的富貴風華, 分享一下豪華的麗池飯店的愉悅情景, 一切沮喪都會雲消霧散, 歌詞列在下面, 一面聽 Neil Diamond 高歌, 一面讀幽默的歌詞, 甚有趣味.
