1934 年出版的一本小說 Goodbye Mr. Chips 是講到一個男生學校的老師的故事, 這位男老師深受學生喜愛, 大家都稱他為 Mr. Chips, Mr. Chips 娶了一位倫敦舞台劇的女演員, 這位女演員風趣活潑, 和 Mr. Chips 的木訥老實堪稱絕配, 這對夫妻在學校像是學生的父母, 每一屆畢業生都帶著懷念他們的深切的感情離去, Mr. Chips 後來做了校長, 他的太太卻在戰爭的空襲中喪失, 每一屆畢業生說到這個悲劇都唏噓不已, Brookfield School 是電影中的男生學校的名字, Fill the World with Love 是 Brookfield 的校歌.
Goodbye, Mr. Chips 三次拍成電影, 也拍成連續劇, 但以 1969 年 Peter O’Toole 主演的那一部最為成功, 人們把 Peter O’Toole 演出的 Mr. Chips 當成曾經真實存在的人物, Fill the World with Love 變成一首大家深深喜愛的歌, 聖誕節經常在音樂會裏出現.

安和我 2004 年開始就每年出遊，到她 2015 年生病，我們過了10 年的少年夫妻老來伴的日子，生活繞著去了那裏，要去那裏的以旅遊為重心的日子，她生病前我們完成坐歐洲之星跨英倫海峽的心願，正期盼再來要去瑞士搭冰川火車 Glacier Express的行程，她卻像下錯了站一樣走了，我掛在火車的門把上急著想把她拉回車上，卻終是眼睜睜地看著她瀟洒地站在上帝的月台上向我揮手，我好像聽她說，這旅程還不錯，Thanks for everything!
葉教授著墨最少的人生憾事, 是她艱難持守的婚姻, 她寫她的先生常常話到嘴邊留半句, 她談她的婚姻, 隱隱地訴說人生沒有愛情的遺憾, 卻又讓我們體會到她那種嫁鷄隨鷄的認命.

我看了那老片子許多次，但只記得看了O’Toole 的片子一次或二次。每次都想到我們都是有緣才會在這世界上遇到你。
