On the page… it looked … nothing … beginning is simple, almost comic, just a pulse, bassoons, basset horns, like a rusty squeezebox, and then suddenly, high above it…an oboe, a single note hanging there unwavering, until a clarinet took it over…and sweetened it into a phrase…of such delight…this was no composition by a performing monkey…this was the music I had never heard…filled with such longing…such unfulfillable longing…it seemed to me that I was hearing the voice of God…在樂譜上讀起來, 好像沒什麼, 開頭很簡單, 簡直是開玩笑般的簡單, 只有單一的脈動, 先是巴松管, 再來是巴瑟木管, 聽起來是一條陳舊的條式手風箱琴努力壓出聲, 忽然, 高高在上的地方, 出了奧博雙簧管的聲音, 一列單音就掛在那兒, 紋風不動, 一直到單簧黑管接手, 將之轉為甜蜜的敘述, 充滿愉悅, 這麼美的曲子怎麼可能是來自那耍猴戲的猴子呢? 這是我從來聽過的美妙音樂, 充滿了渴盼, 無法滿足的渴盼, 我彷彿聽到了上帝的聲音...
莫札特從小被父親帶著巡迴歐洲表演, 嫉妒他的才華的人每每說他是演奏的猴子 (Performing Monkey), 他成年以後到維也納闖天下, 大受歡迎, 但嫉妒他的人仍然不在少數, 宮廷裏的欽定作曲師 Antonio Salieri 雖然嫉妒莫札特的才華, 公眾場合雖絕不稱讚莫札特, 但私底下卻深深折服, 以上就是這位宮廷欽定作曲家聆聽莫札特的曲子, 心裏發出的讚嘆, 曲子是:
